Gameplay & Lore

Will there be more factions than the four that are already announced?

— Four factions are planned for release, we plan to add more post release.

How does this game differ from HOMM?

  • Troops have a maximum stack size

  • As towns and settlements grow, they expand with building sites on the adventure map. You'll have to make choices with your build sites, you can build as many buildings of the same type as you want but there are a limited number of build sites.

  • The magic system is very different, where troops bring "Essence" which fuels spells, so picking troops is both about their stats but also about what Essence they bring

  • The campaign is fairly ambitious with cut scenes and a specific song for each campaign

  • In combat, ranged units can move and shoot, but at a penalty

  • Battlefield has terrain like highground which boost stats of occupying units

  • Units in battle can’t wait but instead have different abilities depending on the unit. Of which one is actually “wait”.

What are the sizes of the maps?

— Small 46x46 tiles, Medium 64x64 tiles, Large 128x128 tiles, Extra large 160x160 tiles and Huge 256x256 tiles.

FAQ — Songs of Conquest (9)

AI

Is the AI cheating?

— Not that much actually. Contrary to what many believe, the AI has no “instant respawn” and it does not receive free doomstacks as soon as it respawns. But the AI is not yet as smart as we aim for it to be, and therefore it currently has a slight advantage in its income from resource buildings and troop buildings as well as its xp gain.

If you do not like the AI’s advantages you can turn it off by selecting Easy as difficulty, which can be done in the lobby for any skirmish map. It may soon be available in the campaign as well.

Why does the AI take so long to complete their turn?

— We are still looking for improvements when it comes to optimizing the adventure AI. Of course it also depends on your computer specs. If you are bothered by slow AI turns, you may be able to improve it a bit by reducing the AI framerate budget to something really low. You can find it in the game’s video options.

How do you set the difficulty level of AI?

When playing a skirmish map in singleplayer or multiplayer, you can set the difficulty for any player slot occupied by AI. It’s located right next to where you choose faction, flag color and starting wielder.

Setting up a game

Why can’t I choose the faction I want in some maps?

— For each map, there are player slots determining where on the map you will start. Sometimes these areas have been designed to fit a specific faction, and thus the player will be locked to that faction.

What does the “Dwelling” setting do when hosting a game?

— It determines how many units that neutral dwellings will produce. E.g. if you find a peasant hut outside the town, this affects how many Militia it will contain and how quickly they repopulate after having purchased them.

How do I add more team slots to a map?

— The number of team slots have been pre-determined by the map designer. When creating your own maps in the map editor you can determine the amount of playable teams yourself. For each team that you add a wielder spawn point, the map will receive one more player slot.

Must all players have downloaded the map when playing multiplayer custom maps?

No. Only the host of the game needs to have the map.

FAQ — Songs of Conquest (12)

adventure map

How does the rally point building work?

— A single rally point by itself lets you recruit troops from any of your towns and settlements. Those towns and settlements do not need to have their own rally point in order for it to work. But in order to use the rally point you have to interact with it by using a wielder. Then you will get to the troop panel, and just below the header “Rally Point” there is a drop-down menu that lets you select which town or settlement to recruit from.

Does having multiple market buildings reduce prices?

— Yes. For each additional marketplace that you own, you get better prices both for selling and purchasing.

Is there a way to cancel movement after already having started to move?

— No.

BATTLE

How do I see the buffs and nerfs on the troops?

— If a troop gets affected by a buff, a green up-arrow will appear next to it. Likewise a red down-arrow will appear if they are affected by a nerf. Hovering those arrows will show you what affects them. You can also left-click on a troop to see all their stats.

What is “Momentum” in battle?

— “Momentum” is a buff that gives additional Defence and Offence to all troops in the team each time a troop in the opposing team gets finished off. Hover the green arrow next to the troop in order to see all their buffs.

How do you unlock higher tier spells?

— When leveling up, you will sometimes be able to choose Essence skills, e.g. “Order” or “Arcana”. These skills are more easily accessible to wielders that are specialized in magic. Once you have obtained an Essence skill, leveling up a few more times will present you with the choice to upgrade it. Let’s say we have Chaos skill at level 2. This would mean we can cast Chaos-based spells of tier 2. For spells that cost more than one Essence type, you will have to upgrade both the corresponding Essence skills in order to get the spell to higher tiers.

Do troops have abilities?

— Most troops have abilities once they have been upgraded, which can be used each turn at the cost of not attacking. Even some vanilla troops also have abilities, e.g. musicians who can play music to inspire its allies or frighten the enemy. And most troops have one or more traits, which are passive abilities.

How does spell damage work?

— The damage of your spells depend on whether you have obtained certain skills and how much you have upgraded them. There are Essencde skills that increase the tier of your spells as well as skills that increase overall spell damage or your spell damage resistance. There are also artifacts and visitable power-up locations on the map that can increase your spell damage or spell damage resistance.

How does the defence and offence work in battle?

— The attacker’s offence is subtracted by the target’s defence. If the result is positive, e.g. 34, the attack will do 34 % extra damage. If the result is negative, e.g. - 50, the attack is reduced by a percentage half of that, so 25 % less damage.

miscellaneous

Is there an old devblog summary somewhere? The devblogs on Steam does not cover the full development?

Yes! The old devblog, which dates back a few more years, is available right here: https://www.lavapotion.com/blog

Do we accept or look for community translators?

— Not right now, but we might be in future. If you want to contribute, join our Discord and stick around for announcements.

Is there any way to see how much gold a unit costs without having to get their building?

— At the moment you can use the Codex (“Tutorials & Codex” in the Main Menu or “Tutorials & Codex” from the Game menu). Choose Units in the top navigation and select the troop you are interested in.

Why can’t I upgrade Rana’s Tremor unit?

— This is a decision by design. Tremors can not be upgraded but in return, Rana’s dragon unit has two upgrades.

Bug reporting

How can I report bugs in the game?
