Archaeology Day at state park
California State Parks and the Colorado Desert Archaeology Society will put on a free Archaeology Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center, 200 Palm Canyon Drive, and the nearby Begole Archaeology Research Center. The family-friendly event celebrates the cultural heritage of the Anza-Borrego Desert and the people who have lived there for thousands of years. Highlights include hands-on pottery making, rock art painting, guided tours, storytelling and a basket weaving demonstration. A guided field trip to an 8.5-acre cultural site occupied by the Kumeyaay about 1,100 years ago will be held that afternoon. The Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park holds a free open house with tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 2-3 at the historic adobe and gardens of the late Hollywood legend Leo Carrillo. A craft activity for kids will be held Nov. 2 on the side patio. In honor of Día de los Muertos, the hacienda will be colorfully decorated and a customary ofrenda table will be dedicated to the Carrillo family. California Surf Museum to honor filmmaker at gala
The California Surf Museum will honor filmmaker Greg MacGillivray as a 2024 Silver Surfer at its 16th annual Gala Fundraiser from 2 to 8 p.m. Nov. 2 at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, 1 Ponto Road. MacGillivray joins honorees Mary Lou Drummy, Mickey Muñoz and L.J. Richards. Highlights include dinner, cocktails and a live auction of surfboards. Women’s group marks 20th anniversary, 2.8 million in grants
The San Diego-based nonprofit Women’s Empowerment International marked its 20th anniversary of giving grants. Since 2004, the nonprofit has given $2.8 million to local and worldwide economic empowerment projects that “provide women with tools to work their way out of poverty.” More than 160 guests attended the recent Empowered WE Rise event at Farmer & The Seahorse in Torrey Pines. Linda L. Katz received the WE 2024 Woman of Empowerment Award for her decades of civic and social advocacy on behalf of San Diego women. The event included silent and live auctions and Maker Fair, and raised $150,000 for projects supported by the nonprofit in San Diego, Mexico, Honduras, Uganda, El Salvador and Guatemala.
Food, wine festival back for 20th year
San Diego Food + Wine Festival, a culinary and cultural festival, is back for the 20th year from Nov. 2-10. The event features hundreds of domestic and international wineries, craft beer and spirits, local culinary legends and nationally acclaimed chefs. Bike the Coast is Nov. 2
Bike the Coast is slated to draw nearly 2,000 riders along Highway 101 and surrounding communities on Nov. 2. Concerts pays tribute to Robert Frost
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of American poet Robert Frost, the San Diego Master Chorale is partnering with The Robert Frost Society, Library Foundation San Diego, San Diego Public Library and Sweetwater Union high schools to perform Randall Thompson’s suite Frostiana, which features settings of seven of Frost’s famous poems, including “The Road Not Taken.” The concerts are at 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd., and at 4 p.m. Nov. 3 at San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Magdalena, Encinitas. Food drive for Feeding San Diego, veterans
The VFW Foundation, Humana and Rotary District 5340 are supporting Feeding San Diego and local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts through the Uniting to Combat Hunger Food Drive across San Diego County. Vista Garden Club Fall Fundraiser
The Vista Garden Club will host its annual Fall Fundraiser to raise funds for scholarships at 11 a.m. Nov. 2 at the Park Terrace Cafe in Brengle Terrace Park, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Muscles on Main Street
Pride of Vista Lions Club hosts its Muscles on Main Street Car Show with a Halloween twist from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at 25 Main St. with trunk-or-treating. Highlights include costume contests for kids, adults (and cars), a cake walk, a scavenger hunt, a DJ and music, and classic cars and motorcycles. Registration open for Junior Deputy Program
The city of Vista and Vista Sheriff’s Station offer the Junior Deputy Academy, a free five-week program for Vista youths in grades 6-11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 7-Dec. 5 at Linda Rhoades Recreation Center, 600 N. Santa Fe Ave. The program focuses on character-building, discipline, courage, leadership, conflict resolution and decision-making and is led by Vista deputies. The program encourages open communication between youths and their families. There will be physical training, role-playing and guest speakers from public safety and law enforcement divisions. Workshops on Age-Friendly Survey results
Vista holds a series of workshops to discuss the city’s Age-Friendly Survey results and provide feedback on the Age-Friendly Plan. These workshops are intended to help the community shape an inclusive and supportive environment for residents of all ages, particularly older adults. The workshops are at 10 a.m. Oct. 30 at Thibodo House, 1150 Lupine Hills Drive; 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Vista Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive; and 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Vista Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive.
